CRESTLINE, Calif. Investigators say the man showed up at a home on the 1000 block of Mars Way in the city of Crestline on Sunday and told a woman that it was against the law to refuse to answer his questions. He asked for information like her name, birth date, and social security number, and then gave her a fraudulent census form.
Because the man hadn't told the woman where to send the form, she called the Census Bureau, only to find out she had been scammed.
Authorities stress that census workers will never ask for social security numbers, bank accounts or a signature, but they will ask for your birth date.
