Man pleads not guilty in 1985 slaying

TORRANCE Janos Kulcsar, 59, of Long Beach is charged with the Dec. 9, 1985, slaying of Archie McFarland, a 58-year-old office equipment technician who was repeatedly stabbed in the driveway of his home.

Kulcsar was arrested the day of the killing, but was later released due to lack of evidence.

Prosecutors now say they have new evidence which allowed them to file charges. Kulcsar was arrested Thursday by Torrance police at his workplace, and is being held on $1 million bail.

He is due back in Torrance Superior Court on May 18, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial. A bail review hearing is also expected then.
