Containers safe in Port of LA Hazmat scare

May 4, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
A white powder leaking from two cargo containers aboard a cargo ship from China was deemed safe by the Los Angeles fire department's Haz Mat team. The U.S. Coast Guard and Los Angeles police and fire departments were called to the port at 4 a.m. Tuesday morning as the APL Tennessee pulled into port.

The captain of the ship became aware last week that two 20-foot-long cargo containers were leaking a white powder used as an industrial disinfectant and bleaching agent, with a strong chlorine odor.

A port spokesman said the cause of the leak was loose-fitting packaging.

The APL shipping terminal was closed for 90 minutes as the containers were moved to another area and were emptied.

There were no reports of illnesses or injuries.
