Man killed, toddler hurt in 2 hit-and-runs

LOS ANGELES The latest crash happened Saturday night. Police said the driver of a 2004 silver Dodge Durango SUV ran a red light and plowed into a Nissan Altima on Figueroa at 135th Street.

Two men and a woman jumped out of the SUV and fled the scene before officers got there. The driver of the Nissan, 33-year-old Eugene Jackson, was rushed to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.

The incident followed another hit-and-run on Friday night on South Figueroa Street. Investigators said a driver ran into a toddler outside a church and left him with life threatening injuries.

The two-year-old boy and his family were just leaving a service when the boy ran into the street. Witnesses said a Hispanic man driving an older model, blue Toyota Corolla ran into the toddler and drove away.

The child was still hospitalized Sunday morning in critical condition.

Anyone with information about either of the accidents is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department at 1-877-LAPD-24-7.
