Do you smell bad? It might be in your head

May 26, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
There are some people who only think they smell bad, but they really don't. It's called olfactory reference syndrome. Some psychiatrists say it can lead some patients to think about committing suicide.

One psychiatrist says many sufferers stay at home, repeatedly sniffing themselves, showering and washing their clothes. They are too ashamed to go out, thinking they smell terrible.

Psychiatrists are considering whether the disorder should have its own entry in the manual of mental disorders, which is used to assess mental problems.
