Palm Springs Airport gets new control tower

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. It will replace the existing tower which was built more than 40 years ago.

The new tower is expected to be activated in 2013 and cost more than $24 million to build.

/*Obama administration*/ officials say without the /*Economic Recovery Act*/, this would have never been possible.

"What we're really launching today is the kind of opportunity that will provide the safety that's necessary at airports like Palm Springs where so many people come year in and year out from all over the world and all over the country," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Construction of the tower is expected to create more than 100 jobs.
