The L.A. County Coroner's Office says a man who died of gunshot wounds in a confrontation with deputies Thursday night fatally shot himself.Deputies were called to the 2800 block of Santa Rosa Avenue about 9:35 pm. Investigators say they found the man in his 60s holding a handgun outside the address.

They ordered him to drop his weapon, but he refused. Deputy Aura Sierra said the man pointed his gun in the direction of the responding deputies, and at least one of them opened fire.

A witness says he heard a couple of gunshots, and then several more a short time later.

The man who was hit died at the scene. The coroner's office determined he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and was not struck by deputies gunfire.

The man's name is not being released until his relatives are notified. The deputies were not hurt.
