Ex-union official guilty of embezzlement

BARSTOW, Calif. Jimmie L. Miles, 70, of Barstow, pleaded guilty to one count of embezzling union funds and one count of filing a false income tax return.

Federal prosecutors say Miles admitted that from 2003 to 2007 he signed more than 350 checks from the union's bank account and used the money for personal expenses, including his credit card payments and mortgage. He also admitted to creating false monthly statements to the union to conceal his embezzling of union funds.

Miles is a former financial secretary-treasurer for Local 1023 of the AFL-CIO International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. The union local represents about 180 members who work for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad based in Barstow.

Miles has agreed to pay $93,283 in restitution and to pay the IRS about $14,466.

He's free on a $25,000 bond until his sentencing on August 30. He could face up to eight years in federal prison.
