Plague-infected squirrel shuts down camp

July 3, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
One trapped ground squirrel has tested positive for the plague, forcing county and forest officials to close the Los Alamos campgrounds in the Angeles National Forest. The site is located in Gorman, south of Frazier Park and north of Pyramid Lake.

The disease can be transmitted through flea bites, causing bubonic plague.

Authorities will test squirrel burrows in the area for fleas and will continue testing squirrels before they re-open the area to the public.
