Man survives being swept off rocks at Cabrillo

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. Authorities are still investigating the incident, but it appears that a man died near Cabrillo Beach possibly due to high surf conditions. Monday, authorities confirmed the man had been swept off the rocks near the beach, but he survived.

A high surf advisory was issued for all south-facing beaches until Tuesday because of a massive storm hitting nearly 7,000 miles away in New Zealand.

"It's crazy," said Billee Thrasher of Colorado. "The waves are way big and people are swimming out there and jumping through them and everything.

Waves anywhere from 5 to 8 feet were seen from the wedge in Newport Beach to Malibu Sunday afternoon.

It was too much for expert surfer Dale Rhodes and his daughter.

"We were out this morning surfing and it was probably head-high plus, but now there's a couple of sets that are maybe double overhead, so the swell is definitely on the increase," Rhodes said.
