Standoff called off; 'suspects' not wanted

BELL, Calif. A South Gate Police officer tried to stop a person believed to have gang ties, but that person took off in a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

A vehicle pursuit continued for about a quarter-mile before the chase went into the city of Downey. The South Gate watch commander, South Gate Police Lt. David Pixler, called off the pursuit, but the information was not transmitted to other law-enforcement agenices.

A helicopter followed the suspect vehicle through Downey into the city of Bell, and witnessed two suspects run into the restaurant.

Officers and deputies from the L.A. County Sheriff's East L.A. Station and South Gate and Bell police departments evacuated restaurant customers while they prepared a perimeter around the Chuck E. Cheese restaurant.

A lieutenant called the incident "a big nothing."

The people who were thought to be suspects were located at the restaurant, but there was no reason to hold them.
