Solar eclipse seen from Easter Island

July 12, 2010 12:39:05 AM PDT
Thousands turned out on Easter Island on Sunday to watch a total solar eclipse darken the sky for four minutes.

The eclipse could only be seen from a small portion of the southern hemisphere.

The moon's shadow darkened skies over the Cook Islands, Easter Island and parts of southern Chile and Argentina.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks the sun as it passes between the sun and earth. The next one will occur in two years.
