Two white men who attacked a Hispanic janitor outside an Orange County hamburger stand in 2007 were ordered to pay the victim $50,000.James Joseph Kelly III, 28, and Justin Louis Mullins, 26, were originally charged with assault with hate crime allegations. However, the two men later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault for the brutal beating of Felipe Alvarado in the parking lot of an In-N-Out restaurant in Garden Grove.

The California attorney general's office filed a civil case under the Ralph Civil Rights Act, which allows violent crime victims to pursue civil penalties.
