Summer arrives in Paris with man-made beach

July 20, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
Parisians don't have to visit the French Riviera to enjoy the beach this summer. For the ninth straight year, nearly 1.5 tons of recycled sand were poured on the quays of the Seine River, which crosses the French capital.

A 2.5 mile stretch is covered with sand.

The artificial beach is meant to give those who can't leave town a touch of summer fun. For a city built on history and tradition, the change is a welcome sight.

The beach will be in place until Aug. 20.
