Suspects who snatched purse from boy ID'd

STANTON, Calif. The boy was sitting in the parked car on Saturday while his mother was inside the post office. Officials said 29-year-old Jose Bermudez reached into the car for the purse, and the boy tried to stop him.

Bermudez allegedly struggled with the boy and eventually got the purse, handing it off to 19-year-old Christina Bailey. The pair then fled in a white Honda Civic.

It was a scary experience for both mother and son, whose last names were not used to protect their identities.

"I was just thinking about, he stole my mom's purse," Angel said.

The boy's mother came out of the post office and tried to stop the suspect. He almost drove over her feet as he sped off.

"I got scared, really scared, started crying," Letcia said.

Documents show Bermudez has a long criminal past, including possession of a deadly weapon and numerous burglary convictions. Bailey pled guilty to carrying a switch blade and knives, and both suspects have narcotics-related convictions.

"Because of their past history of violence, we're extremely lucky neither the female or her son were injured in that robbery purse snatch," said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The victims were able to provide a good description of the suspect, and authorities said they were able to identify the two after getting tips from the public. They also found physical evidence, although detectives are not saying exactly what they found.

Authorities have issued a $100,000 warrant for their arrest. The two may be driving a white two-door 1990 Honda Civic, CA license plate 3TRG966.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Orange County Sheriff's Department at (866) TIP-OCSD.
