July 29, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
The 16th annual X-Games competition kicked off in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday.

More than 200 of the world's top athletes are going to be competing this weekend in competitions such as skateboard, BMX, freestyle, Moto X and rally car.

The four-day games are taking place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and other venues in the downtown area.

"We do a number of road trips and stuff like that, but events like this really showcase the sport and evolve with our sport," said Brian Kachinsky, a BMX rider.

"It's just a treat to be in L.A. and be out and doing our thing and showcasing it to the world," he said.

This is the eighth year in a row Los Angeles has hosted the X Games.
