Bike summit planned to assess rider safety

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is planning to hold a bike summit August 16 to determine how to make city streets safer for cyclists.The summit will focus on discussions of the city's draft bicycle plan, which would create more the 1,600 miles of bikeways, including 200 miles to be built within the next five years.

The bicycle plan also includes Metro's effort to integrate cycling into the rail and bus network, as well as police enforcement of laws for safe driving and cycling.

The mayor is recovering from a broken elbow he suffered in a bicycling accident July 17. A taxi pulled out in front of him, causing him to hit the brakes and go flying over his handlebars onto the pavement. He underwent surgery to repair his elbow which was broken in eight places.
