Sports writer Jay Mariotti arrested in Venice

Sports journalist Jay Mariotti was arrested in Venice on a felony domestic assault charge, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Authorities said the 51-year-old was arrested following a "domestic incident" and was released on $50,000 bail by noon Saturday.

The Los Angeles Times reported that police said Mariotti got into a fight with his girlfriend at a club in Santa Monica before the two took off in his car. According to the Times, the fight continued at the couple's apartment and police found the woman with cuts and bruises.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department website confirms that Mariotti was booked on an undisclosed felony charge at 5:45 a.m.

Mariotti, who lives in Los Angeles, is a panelist on the ESPN show "Around the Horn."

He writes a regular column for the sports website Fanhouse.com and was a longtime columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times.
