High-risk sex offender arrested downtown

LOS ANGELES Michael Shaun Butler was considered an armed-and-dangerous fugitive. Investigators describe him as a career criminal whose previous charges include lewd and lascivious acts with a child, sodomy, rape by force, numerous drug possession charges, firearms and other weapons charges, prostitution charges, and numerous parole violations.

In 1995, Los Angeles Police arrested Butler for felony lewd acts with a child. Police reports described a 15-year-old victim who was drugged and sodomized by Butler. He admitted to the crime and was required to register for life as a high-risk sex offender.

Authorities say Butler violated his parole by removing his Global Positioning System (GPS) ankle monitor. He then vanished.

Multiple law enforcement agencies began searching for Butler. Information narrowed the search to an area near downtown L.A.'s Skid Row.

On Wednesday, a sheriff's security officer assigned to the /*L.A. County Department of Public Social Services*/ office on the 800 block of East Fourth Street recognized Butler as he tried to walk through a metal detector.

The officer notified nearby sheriff's deputies and security officers, who arrested Butler as he attempted to run out the door.

Butler is being held without bail in the Los Angeles County jail on a parole hold. He is also being held on $1,180,000 bail for failing to register as a sex offender.
