L.A. Co. confirms first 2010 West Nile case

Los Angeles County is confirming its first symptomatic human case of West Nile Virus for 2010.The patient, who lives in East Los Angeles, started showing symptoms mid-August.

The teen has since recovered.

The virus is primarily spread through mosquito bites, so infectious disease experts say prevention is key.

  • Wear long sleeved shirts and long pants outdoors.
  • Don't allow water to collect outdoors in old tires, flowerpots, birdbaths or pet bowls.
  • Stock garden ponds with goldfish or other mosquito eating fish.
