Killer whale at Sea World in San Diego dies

September 7, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
Trainers at Sea World in San Diego are mourning the sudden death of a killer whale that was healthy and in the prime of life.

The 12-year-old whale named Sumar became lethargic Monday and was given antibiotics. Sumar died Wednesday afternoon.

Killer whales in captivity often live into their 40s.

It will take several weeks to determine the cause of death.

The afternoon and evening killer whale shows were canceled Wednesday.
