Feds to step up oversight of off-road racing

WASHINGTON The action followed last month's deadly off-road accident in the Mojave Desert, when a pickup truck involved in a race lost control and crashed into a crowd of spectators killing eight and injuring 10 others.

The Bureau of Land Management has promised new safety measures, saying they plan to increase their presence at such events. However, they did not provide further specifics.

The agency had only one ranger on duty patrolling the 50-mile race course where the accident occurred.

Investigators said it was clear the crowd was much too close to the vehicles racing by at high speed.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
