He was convicted of premeditated attempted murder and assault for stabbing ex-girlfriend Kendra Beebe more than 20 times after finding her on her patio with another man.
The defense told the San Diego jury there was no doubt Malil went too far but claimed he had just overreacted and never intended to kill Beebe.
The two had dated off and on for about a year after meeting on an Internet dating site.
Sentencing is set for November.
