Cancer patients' partners prone to distress

September 27, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
A new study out of Denmark suggests men whose wives or girlfriends are suffering from breast cancer are more likely to be hospitalized for mood disorders, including depression and anxiety.Researchers found those men were 39 percent more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric reasons, but the overall risk of hospitalization was still considered to be minimal.

The risk of hospitalization was higher among men whose wives or girlfriends were in the most advanced stages of the disease.

Researchers did not say there is a direct link between the breast cancer diagnosis and a man's psychiatric problems.

The study appears in the Sept. 27 online edition of the journal Cancer.
