Vegas hotel 'death ray' problem burns guests

September 29, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
One of the newest hotels on the Las Vegas strip is scrambling to protect guests from Mother Nature. Employees reportedly call the problem a "death ray."

The curved design of the Vdara hotel apparently focuses too much sunlight onto the pool area. Guests have complained about serious burns, and say the strong rays even melt plastic cups and wrappers.

MGM Mirage, which owns Vdara, said the company is aware of the problem. It actually put a special film on the hotel's windows to reduce the sun's effects, but that obviously hasn't worked.
