Mom pleads no contest in kid pot brownie case

October 8, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
A South San Francisco woman accused of allowing her 4-year-old daughter to eat a brownie laced with marijuana has pleaded no contest to child endangerment and been sentenced to 30 days in jail.Nineteen-year-old Marisela Barraza was sentenced on Thursday after changing her plea. She had originally pleaded not guilty.

She was also ordered to attend parenting classes.

Authorities say Barraza was arrested last month after her sister noticed the 4-year-old had slurred speech and droopy eyelids. The sister took the girl to a hospital, where tests apparently revealed she had marijuana in her system.

Authorities say Barraza initially denied the girl had ingested marijuana, but later said the girl grabbed the pot-laced brownie before she could stop her.
