LAPD officer convicted in hit-and-run

NORWALK, Calif. After deliberating nearly three days, the panel found William Skett, 36, guilty Thursday of the felony charge.

Jurors also found true a special allegation of causing great bodily injury. But jurors hung on a charge of DUI causing injury. He was acquitted of a third felony count, driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol level.

Prosecutors say Skett, a member of the LAPD's Metro Division, hit a man and woman as he was backing his Hummer out of a parking spot and fled the scene near Bouquet Canyon and Soledad Canyon roads in Saugus.

He later abandoned the vehicle, prosecutors said. Authorities said the woman suffered multiple broken ribs and collapsed lungs while the man received minor cuts and bruises.

Skett faces up to six years in state prison when he returns Jan. 13 for sentencing.
