Designated drivers get rewarded downtown

LOS ANGELES The campaign was organized to reward designated drivers for their responsibility and to encourage others to do the same. It was hosted by RADD, the entertainment industry's voice for road safety.

The incentives ranged from free non-alcoholic drinks and food to VIP entrance to some of the city's top hot spots.

"People don't want to drink and drive but still want to go out and have fun and if we reward designated drivers for the night maybe more people will do it. That's what we're saying," said Marian Novak, one of the program supporters.

Participants simply had to show up at the designated venues, tell them they were a designated driver and they got a free drink or other reward for staying safe and sober.

The rewards program began in Sacramento and San Diego. Downtown is the first L.A. location but organizers hope it won't be the last as they plan to expand it to other areas of the city.
