October 18, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed legislation aimed at fighting human trafficking across the globe. The measure will force major retailers and manufacturers doing business in California to disclose their efforts to remove slave labor from the supply chains of goods they sell.

The measure was spurred on by the efforts of actress and civil rights activist Julia Ormond.

"The victims of forced labor and forced sex slavery are all deserving of our compassion, attention and commitment," Ormond said.

The measure will take effect in 2012 and apply to some 3,000 companies that do business in California.
