Storms stir bad memories for Lake Local students

Wood County never went under a tornado warning today, and the superintendent of Lake Local says none of the district's school buildings had to go on lockdown or into a tornado drill. However, some elementary school parents picked their kids up early from school.

The destruction caused by the summer tornado is still visible on the main campus of Lake Local Schools and in the hearts of the parents, staff, and students. So when there's a threat for severe weather, "there's heightened awareness all over our community, given what happened," says Lake Local Superintendent Jim Witt.

The superintendent says, because of the weather forecast, administrators met this morning to review the emergency plan for schools. "We were ready for that, but it never came to that," said Witt.

However, some parents went to pick up their kids early from school, a move the superintendent says he completely understands. "Some of our elementary school kids are still reeling, somewhat emotionally, from the storms of this summer, and maybe it's best they were in mom or dad's care."
