Food, organic waste to be recycled in Orange

ORANGE, Calif. Organic waste from restaurants and hotels, such as the Olive Garden and Hyatt Regency Irvine, will go to the new food and organic facility in Orange.

Tons of food waste that would otherwise end up in landfills will be recycled or composted with new technology.

"This is the first technology in the region that creates an end product that can be used for a number of sustainable applications, including the creation of green energy," said Jason Rose of Waste Management of Orange County.

There are estimates that food waste accounts for nearly 16 percent, or six million tons, of the overall waste in California per year.
