Fall heat continues across Southern Calif.

LONG BEACH, Calif. Several young runners are recovering after being overcome by the heat in Fullerton, where the temperature reached 97 degrees Wednesday, beating a 1976 record of 96 degrees.

Paramedics were called to Craig Regional Park to treat students who were at the park for a cross-country meet. Five students were treated for heat-related illnesses, and three were taken to a hospital.

It was hot all around the Southland. The 100 degree temperature in /*Long Beach*/ broke a record that was set nearly 30 years ago.

People were trying to find ways to cool off in downtown /*Los Angeles*/, where the mercury reached 97 degrees. The previous record of 96 degrees was set more than a century ago in 1900.

Anyone planning to exercise outdoors on Thursday was warned to take necessary precautions, because temperatures will be high again.

The fall-like weather is expected to return by the weekend.
