Fat stem cells may help heal damaged hearts

November 16, 2010 12:00:00 AM PST
Treating heart attacks with fat might sound strange, but Dutch scientists used a patient's own fat cells to help heal damaged hearts. Researchers took fat stem cells from 14 people who suffered severe heart attacks and injected the fat cells directly into the heart.

Six months later, they found that those patients had a 50 percent reduction in heart muscle damage.

Those who received placebo treatments reported no change.
