Obama says full-body scanners are necessary

LISBON, Portugal Obama said he understands why passengers find the new body scanners and heavy pat-downs intrusive, but said they're necessary.

"At this point, TSA, in consultation with our counterterrorism experts, have indicated to me that the procedures that they've been putting in place are the only ones right now that they consider to be effective," the president said during the /*NATO*/ summit in Portugal.

Obama also pointed out that the explosive device used in the Christmas day bombing was not detected by ordinary metal detectors.
