Plastic bag ban approved by supervisors

LOS ANGELES Under the plan, customers at supermarkets and other stores in unincorporated areas of the county will be able to pay 10 cents for paper bags, or bring their own reusable bags. Plastic bags will not be available to customers starting at the beginning of next year.

Supporters of the ban say plastic bags are an environmental hazard that clog up landfills and waterways.

Critics say the fees for paper bags pose an unfair burden on customers, and the reliance on paper over plastic is no better for the environment.
