More cell phone 911 calls getting through

LOS ANGELES The state Public Safety Communications Division said only 5 percent of cell phone emergency calls didn't reach 911 operators this year, compared to 42 percent three years ago.

There has also been a significant improvement in wait times.

In the past, CHP dispatch centers had to transfer 911 calls placed from cell phones to local police or fire agencies, but now local dispatch centers can take most cell phone calls directly.

About 17 million 911 calls were placed by cell phones in California last year.
