Obamas light national Christmas tree

WASHINGTON With the flip of a switch, /*President Barack Obama*/ lit the national Christmas tree Thursday night.

The 40-foot Colorado blue spruce is situated in a grassy area near the White House known as the Ellipse.

The president was joined by his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha.

The holiday tradition dates back to 1923, when Calvin Coolidge became the first chief executive to preside over the lighting of the national Christmas tree.
