December 10, 2010 12:00:00 AM PST
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is calling out the United Teachers Los Angeles union, saying its leadership is a "roadblock" to education reform. The mayor made the comments in a speech at the Public Policy Institute of California in Sacramento on Tuesday.

A former teachers' union employee himself, Villaraigosa called for changes in controversial issues such as tenure, teacher evaluations and seniority.

UTLA leaders accused the mayor of union-bashing.

UTLA's vice president Joshua Pechthalt said Villaraigosa's agenda threatens to "turn back the clock on historic gains made in public education."
