State provides $9 million for gang programs

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Gang Reduction and Youth Development Program will receive $1 million of thos funds.

At a news conference, city and law enforcement leaders gladly accepted the grant from the CALGRIP program, which the governor says will tackle gang problems at all levels.

"In addition to enforcement we also focused on prevention, which is a very important component of all this. I agree with experts who say that the best way to fight gangs is to provide alternatives and opportunities for our kids and that's exactly what we are doing," said Schwarzenegger.

Local officials said this year's grant will be dedicated to reducing gangs in the Rampart area.
