He made a split-second decision to act, taking the weapon from the gunman and opening fire.
"I'm grateful," McDaniel said. "I'm glad I walked through those doors to help."
The suspect was killed and his gun was linked to another deadly shooting in the state.
McDaniel was awarded $5,000.
He and his wife will also receive free tanning for life.
"He risked his life," said LA Tan's CEO Nick Patel. "He's truly a hero."
