December 26, 2010 12:00:00 AM PST
A powerful winter storm Sunday laid a snow blanket from the south to the Northeast, leaving thousands of airline, train and bus passengers stranded.Forecasters predicted snowfall totals of 12 to 20 inches in parts of New York and New Jersey by Monday, when the storm was expected to taper off.

More than 1,400 flights had been canceled out of the New York City area's three major airports alone. JFK International in New York, Newark International and Bradley International in Connecticut are among the airports closed until at least Monday morning,

The cancellations are having a ripple effect on travel throughout the country.

Delta, American, Alaska and Jet Blue are among the airlines with flights from Los Angeles International Airport that were delayed or canceled Sunday night due to inclement weather and airport closures in the Northeast.
