Some painkillers may up heart attack risk

January 13, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
It seems there are frightening risks associated with certain painkillers.Swiss scientists said a review of existing research found that painkillers taken to treat inflammation, such as Celebrex, Aleve and Advil, can raise the risk of heart attack, stroke or death.

However, researchers said the magnitude of the risk is small in absolute terms, approximately one cardiovascular event per 100 patients.

In fact, they said for many patients, the benefits of the painkillers may outweigh the risk.
