Facebook temporarily disables address sharing

January 18, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
Facebook has disabled a feature that lets users share their addresses and phone numbers with external websites and application developers, but only temporarily. Many security experts warned that the feature would pose a risk of identity theft.

Facebook has removed it for now, but says it will come back with changes so that users only share the information when they choose to.

Over the weekend a technology consultant at a security firm warned that rogue applications that post spam or collect cell phone numbers to make unwanted calls could gather users' data.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
