The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office says a criminal domestic violence case against Mel Gibson is ongoing.District Attorney Steve Cooley made the announcement Wednesday after prosecutors met with Gibson's attorneys.

It's still unclear if and when charges will be filed, but Cooley insists a decision will be made in a timely manner.

Gibson's ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, claims the Oscar-winning actor-director struck her during a fight last year.

Cooley says Gibson's attorneys presented information about the accusations during a meeting Tuesday. His statement didn't address Gibson's allegations that Grigorieva attempted to extort him.

The former couple has been locked in a bitter custody dispute over their infant daughter for months.
