Bizarre hit-run chain of events in Hawthorne

January 22, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
Three days after a deadly hit and run in Hawthorne, police are still trying to piece together the bizarre chain of events that were unleashed after the victim was hit and killed. It happened Wednesday night on Crenshaw Boulevard near 120th Street.

Police say Jose Samayoa, 57, was crossing the street when he was struck and killed by a vehicle that fled the scene.

Police believe a second vehicle also hit Samayoa and didn't stop.

When a Good Samaritan came to Samayoa's aid, she was hit and injured by a third vehicle.

That driver stopped, only to be attacked and robbed of his cell phone by an angry mob.

Relatives of Samayoa are looking for justice.

"If they have a conscience they can come forward too because it wasn't just an accident, we lost a family member, and we won't ever see him again," said Samayoa's niece, Vicky Mendez.

Police are looking for that initial hit-and-run driver.

They said he was in a late 1990's or early 2000 Ford Windstar van that was light grey or white in color.
