Alleged car thief drives wrong way, kills 1

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. The crash happened as the suspect was heading sound on the northbound 215 Freeway just south of State Route 259.

The 47-year-old motorcyclist was killed.

Police said the suspect stole the white Ford F-150 from Palm Avenue. The owner witnessed the crime.

"He was able to get into his other car, follow his vehicle and call 911 at the same time," said Lt. Jarrod Burguan of the San Bernardino Police Department. "Our officers were able to catch up with him following his truck."

Officers were able to pull the suspect over near the intersection of the 210 and 215 freeways, but as police approached the truck, the suspect took off and a chase ensued.

The driver exited the freeway at Highland Avenue and went several blocks before entering the Muscupiabe Drive off ramp of the northbound 215 freeway.

"At that point all of our units immediately terminated the pursuit," Burguan said. "They called in the helicopter and they were starting to set up check points at various points along the freeway where the driver may have exited. As it turned out, the driver within a very short distance of entering the freeway struck a motorcyclist head on."

Investigators said the suspect ran off through a nearby drainage ditch.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call San Bernardino police at (909) 384-5742.
