GARDEN GROVE, Calif.

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Galway Street and Garden Grove Boulevard. One of three suspects was shot and killed by police.

/*Garden Grove*/ police said some of their officers were undercover, conducting a separate investigation. They witnessed what appeared to be a robbery in progress.

The officers followed the three suspects who were in a white sedan. When the vehicle stopped at the traffic light, the officers got out of their car and approached the vehicle. Officials said that's when one of the officers was stabbed by a suspect. That officer opened fire, and the suspects took off in the sedan.

The suspect vehicle was later found at Garden Grove Boulevard and Magnolia Street.

Authorities said the undercover officers did identify themselves as police.

"As one of our officers was approaching, he was physically grabbed by a suspect and stabbed by that suspect. The officer fired at that suspect as the vehicle was fleeing from the area," said Garden Grove Police Sgt. Douglas Pluard.

One of the suspects was struck by the gunfire and died. Another suspect was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and was later arrested. A third suspect also was taken into custody.

The incident remained under investigation. Anyone with information was asked to call Garden Grove police at (714) 741-5800.
