Blind man drives special car on race track

January 30, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
In what is believed to be a first, a legally blind man independently drove a vehicle.

It happened at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Fla.

Marc Riccobono took the wheel of a specially designed sport utility vehicle and drove a mile and a half around the track.

The vehicle was outfitted with three laser range-finding sensors which pass information to the driver's hands and seat.

Hundreds of vision impaired fans cheered Riccobono from the bleachers.
