Officials say Jeffrey Stenroos, the Los Angeles School Police officer who sparked a massive manhunt after claiming he'd been shot by an assailant, has told detectives he was responsible for the shooting.

Stenroos says it was an accident.

Detectives say Stenroos, 30, used a gun that is not his service weapon.

Stenroos is accused of filing a false police report, a felony.

Detectives continue to investigate Stenroos.

The officer's protective vest was apparently struck by a bullet, although it's not clear if he was wearing it at the time.
