Long Beach school district approves $33M cuts

February 16, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
The Long Beach Unified School District Board will be sending out layoff notices to employees after approving $33 million in cuts.

The board approved the cuts Tuesday night, and according to the Long Beach Press Telegram, that translates to proposed layoffs of more than 775 employees, including many teachers.

The district needs to reduce spending by about $155 million.

Officials said the cuts could be scaled back considerably if voters approve a state ballot measure in June to extend temporary tax hikes passed when former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was in office.
